Penn State’s annual celebration of Constitution Day will take place on Friday, Sept. 16 at University Park, with events happening throughout the month of September across Penn State campuses.
Although they won’t have their own webcam like their real-life ornithological counterparts in Pittsburgh, birdies and eagles will nest at Penn State New Kensington when disc golf debuts Sept. 2 with the unveiling of a nine-hole course on campus. The layout is open to the public, and there are no green fees.
Encouraging students to develop their unique talents to make the biggest impact on the campus and community, motivational speaker Jon Vroman spoke to members of the class of 2020 at Penn State New Kensington on Aug. 18 as they concluded preparations to begin their college careers.
Delving into a good book for a couple of hours during the workday is the intent of Penn State New Kensington faculty and staff during the annual United Way Day of Caring event at a local library on Sept. 9. The campus volunteers will help the staff of People’s Library in New Kensington by cleaning books and sprucing up the interior of the facility. Work by the campus crew gives the library staff more time to spend on the daily duties of keeping the library operational.
Students who are new to Penn State and all students living in University housing are reminded that they must submit their immunization records using myUHS through a new three-step process. As part of this process, students who do not submit their immunization records prior to Sept. 15 will be unable to register for spring 2017 classes.
As they step on campus for the first time as Penn Staters, incoming students are often out of their comfort zones and in unfamiliar surroundings. Penn State New Kensington’s three-day New Student Orientation is designed to assuage that angst.
Mowgali, Baloo and Bagheera are the stars as Penn State New Kensington’s Summer BBQ and Drive-in Movie series concludes under the stars with “The Jungle Book” on Aug. 10, in the campus’ Athletics Center parking lot. The BBQ begins at 7 p.m., and the Disney flick start at dusk. The family-oriented, PG-rated show is free to the public.
Danielle Richardson was named the 2016 recipient of the Eric A. and Josephine S. Walker Award April 29 at the Academic and Student Achievement Awards ceremony at Penn State New Kensington. The Walker Award is given to the student whose outstanding qualities of character, scholarship and leadership contribute to the prestige of the campus. The award was established in 1980 by Penn State President Eric Walker and is presented at each of Penn State's 24 campuses.
While one personal water filter can save about 300 plastic water bottles from adding to the waste of the United States, one Penn State New Kensington water refilling station can save more than 100,000 plastic bottles from the same demise. Water bottle refilling stations, which are attached to the back of traditional drinking fountains, were installed five years ago as the New Kensington campus became more environmentally friendly. The station in the Administration building, which generates the most foot traffic, recently hit the 100,000 mark in bottles saved.
How everyone from advertisers to politicians use, represent and abuse the American Revolution is the topic of a presentation at 7 p.m. April 5 at Penn State New Kensington. Author and scholar Andrew M. Schocket will talk about “Muscle Cars, Lattés, and Rooftop Grilling: How We Sell the Founders, and Why It Matters.” The event is free to the public.
